This unit is a bit large, but not very heavy at all and has
a convenient handle on top, making it easy to move it to
another room, if necessary. The purifier both takes in and
expels air horizontally in all directions, taking in air
through the grille and expelling it very close to the floor
through the gap that runs around the unit just above the fan
switch. The lower of the two fan settings is very quiet and
is barely audible. The higher setting is audible but unless
you're a light sleeper (e.g., unable to sleep w/ an air
conditioner on), you could put this unit in a bedroom. The
handle has a threaded bolt built into it and screws on to
the top of the unit, securing the plastic grille/cover.
This makes opening up the unit to replace filters is as easy
as spinning the handle to unscrew it and lifting off the

I own this product for 2-3 months now. I still get surprised how intuitive, sensitive, care free and eco-friendly this product is.
Likes:
1. Odor sensor. It senses any offensive odor (often before I can smell it myself) and turns itself to a speedier mode (depending on the concentration of the odor). Whether its my neighbor offending perfume, or my babies gases / poop, it takes care of it. How it does it you can read at the specifications section above, I don't care.
2. Sensitive to the dust too. When I make my bed it detects little dust , and readjust itself to a slightly higher speed.
3. Very quiet. I can not really hear it on its automatic mode, unless it goes to higher speed to wash the air. Excellent for the bedrooms.

I purchased this unit in a closeout sale out of desperation. I've looked at other filtration systems and haven't been impressed with any I've seen to date. Reviews are often mixed or conflicting. The night this came up for sale I had reached the end of my rope with the air quality in my cabin and bought one.

I bought this air purifier because it's reasonable in price and I like the tower design, which doesn't take up a lot of space. One thing I like about it is the optional ionizer. Most towers are ionic air purifiers, but I wanted a filter because I'm concerned about the ozone that the ionizers create as a byproduct. The noise on low is alright; it's tolerable, but I wouldn't want to sleep with it on medium or high because it's too noisy. I've only had it about a week and I think the air smells cleaner and I've stopped sneezing at home. I am seriously considering buying another one to put downstairs. Overall at the price I paid (about $70), so far I'm satisfied.

Love this product but it has one negative It's too noisy to run on required medium speed, and has to be run on low speed, so don't get full effects.

I have both the portable and 3000 G3 Air Oasis Purifiers. I have to say the fan (which circulates and purifies the air) in the 3000 G3 is weak. I am not confident that the 3000 G3 will be effective in a room greater than 1,000 sqft. I also have the Biozone 2000 which has a stronger fan and in my opinon, more bang for your bucks. My Biozone 2000 is still running strong after 6+ years. The portable Air Oasis is great for the price and very effective for around 50 sqft. In all, I still like the 3000 G3 because it is effective (for a smaller area than advertised), quiet and very sleek/high quality looking!

Great Air Purifier
I have this in my basement as it is the room with the most dust as well as my HVAC has its primary draw from this room. This Honeywell works as advertised as long as you change the charcoal filter when the little light comes on.

The only con is the spinning fan was a little off balance. So when it is on high, you can here a little bit of whom-ping sound. I called Honeywell, and they overnighted a new one. This one had the same issue, but not nearly as bad and not noticeable. I think i only heard it b/c i was looking for it.

Its footprint is pretty large, so it may be an eyesore if you have it in a main room.

1. What A Difference!
I have severe year-round nasal allergies. To make matters worse, my prolonged allergy symptoms have triggered the growth of polyps in my nasal passages. Zyrtec and other allergy medications offer only partial relief. Then, I stumbled on this air purifier, which is very favorably rated by Consumer Reports. I decided to get it to see if it would help with my allergies. I have been using it for one and a half years now, and the difference it has made is simply remarkable!

I use the Honeywell HEPA Air Purifier in my bedroom, which measures about 15' x 13' - well within the specification of 17' x 22' for the optimal performance of the air purifier. I keep it turned on 24-7 to keep the air in my room always dust and allergen free. The filter is a lifetime HEPA filter that *never* needs to be replaced. It does, however, have to be periodically cleaned.

2. Love this loud white noise machine --- I mean air filter
As others have stated, this machine is loud especially on the high setting. However, my wife and I have found that the sound actually helps us sleep by drowning out any other noise in the house. We now take it with us to hotel rooms when we travel (rarely).

My only complaint about the air filter is the blue LED light that is on constantly. It can really light up a room and we prefer the room dark. After about two years of trying to cover the light with towels or even velcro'd on pot holders - I finally took the top panel off and removed the blue LED. It was easier than I expected and didn't damage anything - which was a fear. So if offends you - blind the big blue eye.

It has also helped with our allergies, but I think at this point we'd keep it around for the noise :-)

Works but noisey
Works great, moves an amazing amount of air (hopefully well cleaned air), the problem is that its noisy. I have a slightly cheaper Honeywell unit that is much quieter. With the reusable filter its still a good purchase.

1. Good Machine, but I Had a Problem with It
I really liked this air purifier, and I noticed that it did make a quite noticeable difference in the number and severity of my husband's and my allergy symptoms (despite the fact that neither of us have truly severe allergy problems) when we let it run in the bedroom at night while we slept.
Unfortunately, about nine months after we bought it, despite regularly changing filters, it started to sound as if it was struggling and then is stopped working entirely. Fortunately, it has a three-year warrenty, so the customer service rep is sending me a shipping label, so I can ship it back and have a new one sent to me. I don't know it this is atypical of the product, but it is a bit of a hassle for me. Hopefully, the new one will last longer.

2. Editorial Review is Incorrect
The Editorial Review (above) is incorrect. Model 4160 does not have an automatic setting. If you are interested in that feature, you'll need to upgrade to model 4161. Since the unit is noisy on the higher settings, I would recommend rarely using anything other than the Whisper (somewhat of an exageration) setting anyway. It's built well though, and seems to work.

Can't get a better deal
I purchased this filter a month ago. I love it. The UV light is awesome for the price and best of all this is a fairly quiet filter. I love the quick clean setting and use it after the dog has been in the room. It has made a huge difference and my husband and I are both sleeping much better. Highly recommended. 1. Go for the GOLD!
Yes, this thing will set you back a little more "gold" than something like the other product I tried, the Honeywell 50250 Envirocare Air Purifier. However, BELIEVE ME PEOPLE, it is well worth it and I am definitely not one to throw money around left and right for little or no benefit. I love VALUE and the value factor with this unit is excellent.

I returned the Honeywell unit because, quite frankly, folks, it was too noisy. Even on the low setting, it sounded like a big whooshing floor box fan on at least medium if not high. It was white-noise-ish but it still interfered with TV watching to an annoying degree. On the other hand, if you WANT white noise, by all means go for that unit.

As soon as I packed that thing up to send back, I ordered this, the Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX unit, and could not be happier. With the Sharp rebate available plus a special Valentine's day discount from Amazon, I was able to get it for a final bill of two hundred thirty eight...

2. PERFECT!!!
Is the only word I can think of for this unit! In "Silent" mode it REALLY is silent! I keep it on "Auto" in my bedroom and you can't even here it. Every now and then, the air quality goes to "slighty impure" and it kicks into gear and cleans the air. On "Max" it really moves the air! I love the fact that it has a "thick" carbon pre-filter instead of those "thin" sheet carbon filters. It'a all the features you'll ever need in a purifier. I highly recomend this unit

Excellent air purifier (may be the best in its class)
I bought this unit about 5 months ago. Of course I did all kinds of research before buying it. Sharp's Canadian website has a ton of info. on this unit, it even has a rebate which, unfortunately, does not apply to US purchases.

I would elaborate more on features and why I liked this unit but you can read more about it through the reviews here as well as from Googling (try Sharp's Canadian website). Instead, I will share my after-5-month experience.

I've had to clean my filter once after 5 months of use. Cleaning is very easy, just pop open the cover, take out the filters, vacuum them then put them back in. Sharp reccommends buying new filters every 5 years. That's a huge cost saving versus what other air filters will cost down the road. 1. Don't recommend, period!
Bought three of these based on reviews from their own website. Should have known better. My air conditioner filters more particulate. The filter intake barely could hold a tissue in place, so you can tell there is really not much volume passing through. The fans are not strong enough to pull air through the filter. The filter medium is just too thick and air does not easily pass through. The ozone feature deoderizes, but I wanted air purification. We noticed no difference in air quality. Go with a better known brand like the Hamilton Beach. To the reviewer who suggested the filter cover may not have been removed - the perforated cover was removed.

I have been using the Multitech for over two months now, having used only Bionaire products before, and I am very satisfied. The unit is clearly cleansing the air as advertised, and I get very satisfactory airflow (especially on Maximum setting). (I wonder if those users who complained about the Airflow had not read the instructions and removed the tear-off flap from the filter-cartridge before turning the unit on!?) Look people: it's NOT a Fan; it won't blast air out like a wind tunnel. What it does is a thorough job of cleaning and filtering, and unlike other ionizer/filters, it actually kills germs and mold with ultraviolet light as well. I strongly recommend this unit.

Great value for its bucks
This purifier combines several (i.e. 5) techonologies in one inexpensive unit. There are purifiers which employ only one technology and yet cost about twice as much, such as the Ionic Breeze Quandra. It does make a difference in the air, and the filter seems cheaper and needs replacement less often than with other purifiers.

It also has a "sanitizer" option, which is basically an ozone generator. Note: do not exagerate with ozone, it's not safe in high quantities - if you smell "funny", then ventilate the room, you have too much ozone.

You even have a timer to turn off the unit - I use it to have my room's clean when I get back from work, yet without having it run needlessly. What I wished is different is to have the option to turn off the sanitizer only with a timer, not necessarily the whole unit. It is safe to leave the unit running 24x7, but not true for ozone, so I see a value in having that feature.

Overall, worth every penny.

1. Works Great and Quiet!
I spent I don't know how many hours researching, looking for my next air purifier. I have a Honeywell for my living room, but it's about 7-8 years old (still works, amazing enough, being on 24/7) so it's an older model that is not the quietest. Even on low setting, I can hear it anywhere in the room. So I was looking for something for the bedroom that would be QUIET but still effective. Read reviews and research for maybe 20 different models/brands, and settled on giving the Winix 5000 a shot. I could not be happier (so far).

I've only had it running for about a month now, but it IS quiet. There are 5 speed settings, and you cannot hear it at either of the 2 lowest settings. At the middle setting, you can hear it, but it's still quieter than my Honeywell at it's lowest setting. It really moves the air through, you can feel it and smell the difference if you're dealing with any odors or off-gassing from anything. 2. Works well for the money
I picked up the Plasma 5000 over the weekend for my small apartment as my girlfriend suffers very badly from cat dander and dust allergies, usually to the point that it makes it hard for her to sleep as I have a cat.

Set the unit going at half speed overnight in my 12x12 bedroom and both of us slept straight through the night without her having any trouble at all. I didn't think that I had any allergies, but now we have this air cleaner I have noticed that I snore a lot less and don't get anywhere near as stuffed up as I used to.

On 'turbo' mode it is quite noisy but pumps a lot of air out fast so is good for clearing a small room quickly. The clean air pumps out of the top of the unit and is sucked in through the front so it's ideal for tucking up against a wall or piece of furniture.

I paid $236 for mine and so far feel that it is worth every penny for my small living space.

This model is, as of May 2007 the latest from 3M's new series of air purifiers (3M has been making the filters for years, but it's a relative newcomer to the air purifier market). Speaking as an allergy sufferer and former asthmatic, I've had air purifiers around me for years before Sharper Image made the things 'go mainstream' with their incessant advertising for their Ionic Breeze.

This unit works extremely well. The filter is a good quality 3M one that captures pollen, dander, and dust mite debris. It's easy to install - slides into a mount in the machine - and it moves a large volume of air. (The filter's price is in line with other purifiers in this range.)

Noise in the lowest setting is almost nonexistent, which is a must when you keep a purifier in the bedroom like me. Noise is considerable at the highest setting, but no more than comparable machines.

I did something a little different for this product, I wrote the first part before I had purchased the yet. My observations were based on research I have done, then I updated the review after I actually bought the product.

I acccidentaly ran across the Filtrete series of air cleaners while looking for Filtrete filters for my HVAC unit. I have used Filtrete filters for several years and I will attest that they get dirtier faster (which to me means they really are doing something) than any other brand. Sure they cost about $10 each but who cares if they do the job? I am amazed every time I replace a Filtrete filter in my HVAC how dirty it gets. Compare that with all of the air "purifiers" and "filters" I have bought, having spent well over $1000 on such junk. The worse of all time was the Oreck, which I seriously feel should be sued for false advertising. It didn't do anything at all and yet was one of the most expensive "air cleaners" I ever bought. I like it, not love it
We've had this exact model for over 2 yrs. We are, unfortunately, in a high risk fire area (2 major brushfires recently) and high dust area. We like the features and slim design. It almost functions as 'white noise' in the bedroom.
This cleans the air up real nice but it is next to impossible to find the replacement filters. You cannot buy them from the 3M site, and the retailers do not have the exact size. We've resorted to cutting them down and or washing the disposable ones. Therefore, the unit probably isn't used to it's full efficiency b/c it's hard to time the filter replacement well due to inavailability.

I have no instruments to measure this, but this air cleaner seems to take in a large volume of air and clean it very effectively with HEPA filter. It has three speeds and can be anything from quiet and ready to maintain the clean air to very loud and able to clean dirty air. White color helps it look less like an industrial item in a bedroom.

1. I Was Skeptical, But It Works
I was extremely skeptical about whether this thing would work. But I was tired of waking up stuffed up every morning and I had to believe I'd sleep better if I wasn't so stuffy. I have a cat who sleeps at the foot of my bed, and I figured he was a big part of the problem, so I bought it.

I saw drastic improvement after two nights. I was barely stuffed up at all. I set it up to circulate clean air over to me and suck in near the cat, and it worked well. Consumer reports says that you can get a lot of the same benefit from cleaning well and opening the windows, so I tried that the next night. I washed the bedspread, vacuumed, dusted, and opened the windows. I woke up completely cleared up. Better than with this unit.

Now, do I have the time to do all that cleaning every weekend? Nope. So I'm keeping the Hamilton Beach.

People complain about the noise, and it is loud. The "whisper quiet" setting is about as loud as a 19" box fan on medium, so it isn't at...

2. Pros and Cons (just a couple) of a Great Air Purifier.
Pros:
- Picks up where your AC filter slacks. Our AC filter is located right outside our bedroom, and the purifier still manages to trap a large amount of airborne material that air flow from the ac doesn't pick up. This is a significant quality considering that we also use the highest rated AC filters available.
- My wife's allergies have significantly decreased. We both wake up now with the ability to breathe through our noses. It's only when she ventures to the far side of the house that she starts sneezing.
- It must cut down a lot on animal dander. We have three cats that spend a good deal of time in our bedroom (it's the coolest and darkest room in the house), and were probably the main cause of her allergies. Not so much anymore!
- The main filter only needs to be changed once a year (so says Hamilton Beach), and are reasonably priced at around $40.
- The carbon pre-filter, which should be changed every three months, costs around $8.

After researching various asthma/allergy web-sites, we bought this product for our two year old, who suffers from allergies, mild asthma and other respiratory issues. Quite frankly, we were skeptical as to whether an air purifier would help, and therefore, we did not want to spend a fortune on the products recommended by consumer reports, costing hundreds more. The Hamilton Beach purifier had strong ratings and was reasonably priced, so we decided to give it a try. From night one, we have observed marked improvements in our child's breathing and congestion. Thus far this cold and flu season, she is doing great. The only negatives are the size (a bit bulky) and it is a little noisy ("white noise" similar to a fan). I purchased this air filter a few weeks ago. Apart from being very noisy, it was totally ineffective. After running for two weeks, the filter still has not collected any dust! I didn't research enough before buying an air purifier, but now realize that HEPA is the only way to go if you actually want to purify your air, not just move it around.

As a replacement purifier I purchased the Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner (see my review of this product). It works much better and actually removes particles etc from the air really well.

I tried selling my IFD fiter on E-Bay but no one would buy it - not even for 3 dollars! What a POS!

2. DISSATISFIED, AM RETURNING BOTH ITEMS PURCHASED!!!
This is my first purchase on Amazon and I am satisfied with the timely delivery of my purchased product. However, I am very dissatisfied with the quality of this product. First, the removable rear casing, which allows access to the filter, does not fit properly on both units I purchased. Once the rear casing is removed it takes some force to get it back into place. Secondly, Amazon promotes this product to operate with "whisper-quiet operation". This statement is a farce. This product produces much more noise than my upright rotary house fan, both in the turbo setting and the quiet setting. I have made the mistake of purchasing two (2) of these Honeywell Enviracare 60000 Tower Air Purifiers for my family. I will not make the mistake of keeping them and will be returning them very shortly. This product is best used as a stationary low speed fan. A bit too noisy
The unit is a bit too noisy, so much that it is very annoying if not on the low setting (but still noisy). I've had it several months, and have found it to be reliable, but not that good of a cleaner. It is a bit large, but not heavy. It's probably best for a room in which you wish to circulate air, with a small bit of purifying needed.

1. Excellent HEPA air filter
The product description and independent reviews (e.g., allergybuyersclub) say it all. This is an excellent air filter, quiet & reliable. The improvement in my office's air quality is dramatic. My unit is combating strong chemicals, pollen, auto fumes & cigarette smoke seeping in my window cracks, and occasional thick smoke from controlled burns. With the BlueAir601 on, I don't react to any of it, and I have very sensitive allergies.

2. Loud and odoriferous
This air purifier is good looking and mobile on it's casters but quite large. It's loud on the settings you would use if you have air problems like pet dander, light tobacco smoke, car exhaust, etc. I run it on MAX while at work and lower it while at home. I bought the 601 with the optional Smokestop filters and it has decreased residual smoke odors from my downstairs neighbors but with a twist...the machine (with these filters at least) gives off an odd and unpleasant odor of its own. I'm told the smell is harmless and should pass after a while but I've read of this issue in a number of online reviews so I doubt that it is just my unit. I am on the fence about keeping the 601 and am exploring other air purifiers in the mean time.

Truly the best
The dust problem in our house was unbelievable. A visible coating of the stuff appeared within 24 hours of dusting. We have replaced windows, we sealed the air conditioning system, we replaced 3-month filters every month. Still, dust dust dust dust.

We tried the Ionic Breeze (actually four of them at once), a Kenmore model, a Whirlpool, and several others. (For technical reasons, we could not get a "whole-house" system.) My research finally lead us to the Blueair 601 . . . and thank goodness it did.

This unit is amazing. On high, it devours dust so fast that thrice-a-week dusting in the master bedroom has turned into twice-a-month. We bought a second one for the family room and have had the same results.

1. Best Purifier I Have Ever Used
I have tried many types of purifiers over the years. My allergies would always lay me out and severely impact my quality of life. After becoming disillusioned by the Honeywell HEPAs and the Orek (eegads never buy the Orek!!!!!) I started a very detailed research project.

Consistently, the BlueAir purifiers were at the top of every review and recommendation list. The only things beating them out were either attached to a house (I live in an apartment) or over $800. While the BlueAir itself is not cheap, I decided that my health was not worth saving the few hundred dollars another Honeywell would save me.

It was the best $500 I ever spent.

It runs quiet, it moves huge volumes of air and the filters are obviously doing their job. My allergies have subsided to a point where I no longer take meds!

The unit has 4 speed settings, the lowest being called "HEPASilent" which is barely audible, and the highest being much too loud to use during...

2. Works Really Well!
I bought three of these for our townhouse - 1 for each level. We have 27 windows in this house (at least) and the dust is unbelievable! At first when I plugged in these purifiers I wasn't sure I noticed any difference so I did a test. I dusted in the master bedroom which gets the most dust (8 windows alone)and let this puppy go. Oh there was still dust after a two week period but then I dusted again and turned it off....the room was caked in dust so this purifier is definitely doing some heavy duty work. We've had these now for about 2 years and I think they're great! I'm glad we went with this model. After 6 months just look at your filters - it's amazing how much dirt this machine takes in.

Good Unit
I bought this unit last year. It does a good job of eliminating the dust. The owners manual says to replace the filters every six months. When I first read that, I thought that was just a tactic to make more money. After six months I checked them, and they needed to be replaced. With new filters, I turned it up to the next higher speed, and within three months they were dirty. The filters are not cheap (other brands aren't either), but that's the price I have to pay for cleaner air.

This unit has four speeds. On one and two, it's almost silent. On speed three you can hear it, but it's not objectionable. I leave it on that one all the time. The highest setting is too loud.

The unit uses electostatic technology, and at first the air seemed to have an unusual quality, like being at a high altitude. But after about a month I got used to it, and now I would never turn it off.

The only objection I have to this and most of the low to moderate priced home air...

2. It really does the job
A friend recommended this purifier and I ordered three. Gave one to my son and one to my daughter and we kept one. Both of our children think it really takes orders out of the room and they feel like there is less dog hair around.

Been using this for one week now. Seems to be working well. Not much air flow on quite setting. Cant really hear the fan on quite mode but obviously you will on all other speeds. The air quality sensor works great and will adjust the fan speeds when its on auto. So far so good.

2. On my second year
I have married into a cat family and my daughter has dust allergies. This unit makes the whole downstairs livable for both of us. The price is worth it as we are not supplying the allergy meds as much as we used to. A must have for any family that has allergies.

This year has been particularly bad so far, despite a heavy use of anti-allergy medication like benadryl.
Last week I decided to buy this Holmes air purifier, to see if that works. And, surprisingly I must confess, it is actually very efficient against airborne allergens: I placed this unit in my bedroom, and I had no problem sleeping at night. My itchy throat and watery eyes completely disappeared. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this purchase.
The only issue I see is that the unit is a bit noisy, but that does not prevent me from sleeping (it's like having a A/C unit on, you get used to the noise). So I recommend this air purifier for people who suffer from pollen allergies.

2. Great dust eliminator!
I got this because of our allergies, but I can't emphasize enough how impressed I am by the incredible reduction of dust in the room. Makes me want one for every room.

Holmes not truly honor their 5 years warranty
Purchase a Holmes HAP756 in January 2009 and it is dead after 5 months. Call service department, they quickly sent me a new replacement without telling me that they were sending me a smaller unit (HAP 726). After contacted the service dept. last week, Holmes refused to send me the same model for replacement claiming the model was no longer in stock because they don't produce anymore. In fact the model HAP756 and HAP756U (current selling model is almost identical except for a chrome trim at the control panel). Beware buying any products from this company, they are not truly honor their warranty.

This is a good air filter. It does the job of cleaning the air so you can breath. I live in a basement. There's water damage and clothes left there. So it was real hard to breath. I also didn't know if the air had mildew, or other living organisms.

I woke up with bad headaches or a stopped up nose. Some times I would just be sick with cold type symtoms.

The reviews on this item were 21 out of 22 (good) on one site and the same kind of thing on others. I used chatt window customer service with a site that sells air filters. They recommended a $500-600 filter. The reviews on it were not even close to this one.

I decided to go back give it a try. I got the same results as they did. I can breath. I'm not stopped up or sick every day. I trust the air I breath. Its worth the money.

This is a review for the 50300 which is similar to the 50250.
This air cleaner really puts out the volume of clean air on high speed, but it is loud. You can not talk or hear over it.
The slow speed is you can hear talking and TV over. Then turn it on high at night for white noice or when you leave the room.

If you want quiet, try the 17005n which does not have the volume (200 sq. ft room) but is quiet enough for to hold business meetings or home use.

2. good, but still expensive to run
I don't believe this model is still being made - I think it has been replaced by the 50250. The unit is large but powerful. I have it in my bedroom and I constantly have it running on low. I have a cat and his litter box is in the bedroom as well (no other place for it in my small 740 sq. foot condo). If I turn it on the highest speed, I can't hear myself think, the middle speed is better but I still don't think I could sleep with it on that speed, but the low speed produces a nice amount of "white noise" to drown out the next door neighbor's music. I believe to get the "true" advertised cleaning efficiency, the unit needs to be running on the highest speed.

That being said, I'd say it was a good unit, but the expense of the filters is a big negative for me. First off, I replace my pre-filter once a month. I have to - it goes from black to totally white and when the pre-filter becomes too dirty, the efficiency of the unit is lost. Plus, I start noticing alot more...

Had no faith the money would pay off...but then....
My allergies are just a constantly slight annoyance since moving to Texas. I'm always on the stuffy side...random sneeze attacks, drippy nose. I'm always breathing out of my mouth. My husband insisted we buy this filter, and I had no faith it would help at all, because I couldn't imagine a FAN basically could clear the air of whatever bothers me. However, this works. When I'm stuffy, I turn on the hepa filter, and within 20 minutes of it being on high, I can turn it to low because I will be able to breathe again through my nose. It just really cleans the air. I just purchased my second Hunter Air Purifier. I gave my old one which I had for about 5-6 years to my mother as I was moving out of state and thought it was a good time to upgrade. (The old one is still working perfectly and I can't believe how old it is!) The first purifier I had to return because it started smelling like something was smoldering. The replacement is working ok as of now,but I don't see any difference in the air. We have used the Swordfish Ultraviolet Air Purifier in our home for about 5 years now. It works great. We very rarely get colds now. Our house is a converted cottage from the 70's with a crawl space underneath so base air quality is dubious. The Shark Ultraviolet Air Purifier sterilizes all the air that goes through our furnace air duct system using Ultraviolet Light. Ultraviolet Light kills micro organisms and disrupts the DNA and RNA (genetic code) of micro organisms so they don't reproduce before they die. The system works the same as Ultraviolet sterilizers for water but it is set up to sterilize air. The Ultraviolet light kills the germs, microbes and viruses that pass through the ultraviolet light it emits. I set mine up so it "lights up" both our furnace air filter and our humidifier both of which are breeding grounds for bacteria. I still clean and replace them just as often but I know that bacteria is much less likely to grow in between maintenance with the Ultraviolet...

2. The unit does not last.
I used this unit for about ten months. The lamp went out, so I ordered a replacement lamp. The unit still would not turn on after replacing the lamp. There is no power to the unit. I tested it in several different outlets to be sure that it wasn't the outlet. For the price I would expect the unit to last much longer than 10 months. If you do purchase it, I would suggest buying a warranty. I couldn't find one from the manufacturer. I can not state whether there was any noticeable difference in the air during the ten working months of this product.

One of the best things I have done in my house
I had a problem because the drain on my central air system was not properly installed. Because of this I got a small flood which led to the growth of mold and mildew in the HVAC. When the system would turn on I would get this damp smell. My PC is near a vent and I would immediately start coughing when the AC went on. The problem would improve somewhat in the winter when hot air was running through, but never really went away and came back again. I did a lot of research on UV lights. The Oil Company wanted a $1000 to install two units. I have a large house about 4200 square ft. and an air handler for each floor. The Units are rated for 3600sq ft each. I live in an apartment and a few months ago I got new neighbors in the apartment below. They smoke constantly and often have parties with 8-10 people in a tiny apartment all smoking all night. The building is old, the smoke comes through not only the ventilation system, but directly through the floors and fills my apartment with the disgusting stench of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). This unit saved me from having to move. It's that good.

The HEGA filter is particularly good at removing gas molecules and thus odors and ETS. I have allergies, but they're manageable - I bought this primarily for odor and ETS control and to that end, it works perfectly.

It's much quieter than I though possible for something that moves so much air. Even on the highest setting, I can easily sleep in the same room with it. Some may be more sensitive to noise, but it's much quieter than some IQAir models that I've heard. On the lowest setting, it's barely audible.

2. I've tried others and the Austin AIr's the best
I've tried cheaper air cleaners and they just don't keep my allergies clear like my Austin Air. The Austin Air does not require costly (and often difficult to find) filter replacements. Instead, you just vacuum off the surface and the machine's good to go for a couple of weeks. Think of it this way, if there's dust on top, you want to wipe out the vents.

We had one incident with a bearing problem in one of our machines and Austin Air replaced the machine under warranty with us only being out the cost of postage. They're great people to deal with--friendly, helpful, and they got my machine back FAST during cedar fever season.

Add to that, the white noise the machine generates is great to help you get to sleep. I'd highly recommend the Austin Air and will buy more as money and needs dictate.

This is so good that a friend whose child suffers from severe asthma [and who has an Oreck air filter that cost about $800--- which broke down as soon as the warranty expired], could actually sense how much cleaner the air was when she was in the vicinity of the Austin and asked me where she could buy one. She asked even though I have had this for nearly 10 years [one filter change so far, by the calendar, not because I sensed it stop working].

I can't recommend it strongly enough.

While it is a bit noisy, it's an even background noise, not at all irritating [and I am a real noise crank]; in fact when my neighbors have a party [their dining room wall is my bedroom wall], the hum actually is an added bonus and helps me to fall sleep.

This HEPA Air Purifiers give to us some advantages, like this :

I purchased this unit and used it for about one week. The reason I bought this unit was that when the sunlight came in the picture window just right, you can see the cloud of particles floating in the air.

So I bought this filter and placed it dead center of the area illuminated by the sunlight. After running the unit for 24 hrs/day for about 8 days on low and a couple 4-5 hour periods on high, I inspected the filter for debris/dust. I was surprised to find no dust accumilation at all. As a matter of fact, the only dust that could be found in the unit at all was on the large particle screen in which the holes are so large, it would be large enough to permit small insects can get through with no problems.

Thinking that it was defective (i.e. the voltage creating device could be bad and how would you know), I returned the unit. I also purchased a MIRV 11 HVAC filter which purports to clean the air of the same types of particles. I intended to provide myself a...

I suffer from Spring/Summer allergies with sensitivity to other indoor irritants for many years. I have tired other models of air cleaners which I have found to help.

This unit does the job. You don't have to buy very expensive HEPA filter replacements and at its quietest setting you can leave it running in the room where you sleep with the door closed. It will make it possible to get through allergy season without being totally wiped out.

I would like to remark about some of the negative reviews of this device.

1. It is not a house cleaner and does not have a charcoal filter in it. It cannot make a household that has continuous heavy smoking smell all clean and fresh. It is not designed to make up for lack of housecleaning such as vacuuming rugs.

2. The particles that cause irritation are not easily seen with the naked eye. If this unit is operated for a reasonable amount of time the pre-filter will catch the bigger...

Good value but noisy.
This is a replacement for the unit I got from Sam's Club a year ago. I have been looking for a good air cleaner with permanent filter. The first one I got from Sam's uses electrostatic precipitation which is not very efficient. In addition, it generates a lot of ozone in the room by the UV germicidal lamp. Thank God that there was a recall on that unit and I got a full refund after 10 months of use. Then I found this unit that costs 1/3 less after a $50 rebate. This one uses a so-called permanent filter that can be cleaned by vacuum. I have been using it almost every night for 2 months. The filter still needs not to be cleaned yet (YMMV). It has 3 speed settings, but only the low one can be used at night due to the noise. The timer is easy to set, but it will be better if there is backlight on the display when programming it. The rebate was received in 8 weeks as promised.
