I received the Coway AP-1012GH Smart Air Purifier with HEPA Filter and followed the set up instructions.
First remove the front cover, remove the plastic wrap from the odor filter and the Hepa filter and placed them back in the unit, put the pre-filter on top and replaced the front cover.

I then turned the unit on by pressing the Power button. The device has a large blue indicator light in the shape of a circle. The color changes from Blue (clean), Dark Purple (polluted), and Red (highly polluted) as a sign of air quality. I has 4 settings A, 1, 2, and 3. A is automatic, it monitors the air quality and adjusts the fan speed as needed. 1, 2, and 3 settings are basically hi, med, and low fan speeds that run constantly at whatever speed number is selected. It also has a timer that you can set so the device will run for 1hr, 4 hrs, or 8 hrs and then shut itself off. Very simple to set up and operate.

Don't buy an Oreck AirInstinct 200..Buy this instead! (same thing, half the price)
So as a satisfied owner of a Oreck AirInstinct 200 I was looking for a second air purifier as I was very satisfied with the Oreck's performance in my bedroom (20'x15'). My wife and I have sever allergies and were looking to buy a second purifier to enhance the filtering in our bedroom (where we spend most our time). The Oreck 200 runs about $499 retail and $349 on amazon. I actually got mine on Ebay new for $225 so it was a pretty good deal.

I starting researching other air purifiers to keep my options open but most likely was going to settle on another Oreck. BUT, I came across a company called COWAY..It seems they are centrally located outside of the USA but had very similar looking auto air purifiers. After reading all there very similar literature to Oreck I decided to try this Coway AP-1012GH as it looked very similar to the Oreck. For $189 it was worth it to me. They obviously make their products in the same manufacturing facilities as Oreck.

1. So far, so good -- and the oscillating is the best!
I decided to get this air cleaner after trying the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze and a larger Honeywell HEPA filter. At the time of purchase, the Sharper Image was the only one with a permanent filter. This was a big plus for me seeing as the older HEPA cleaners have 2 filters to replace, the larger one being nearly the price of the machine. This Honeywell tower has a permanent filter.

There are many claims for and against the Ionic Breeze. I'm still undecided on how effective it is -- but I feel almost the same way about my large HEPA filter. I found myself running both of them to control my allergies. Although I cleaned them regularly and found dust on both, I can't say the air was particularly different. However, shortly after turning this on in the bedroom for the first time, I could smell a difference. I haven't had it long enough to say it's made a real dent in my allergies -- plus the fact that my allergies are intermittant -- but I'm pleased that I even notice it...

2. Its a great buy!
Its very sturdy and well constructed, it cleans and circulates the air through out my bedroom... The only thing I'm slightly worried about is the strange smell... Maybe I'm just used to breathing dirty moldy air

Okay... The strange smell has disappeared after my first day of full use so maybe it has something to do with the purifier being brand new... I highly recommend this product because its very sturdy and the base feels weighted so theres no need to worry about it moving or falling over while it oscillates! I gave my 21 inch box fan to my friend Amanda because this device blows just as much air with hardly any noise at all, its very close to being silent... and the air feels and smells clean which really makes me happy... I mainly purchased this product because I hate vacuming... I really hate vacuming! I'm really hoping this product rids my room of dust and cuts my vacuming down to once a week...

So remember... This machine is very quiet...

Pays for itself in filters
Confusion in HEPA home filters is starting to rise--I was at a local home improvement shop and they had a whole selection of machines--From True HEPA to "Hepa Type" and this one is supposedly better then "Hepa Type" but not as good as True Hepa. So for those who are allergic to everything, you may be better off with what Honeywell calls a "True Hepa."

For me at least, I'm doing well with this model, and I'm relieved that I no longer have to buy 70 dollar filters for my old Honeywell machine.

As someone who is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants and irritants, I purchased a round Honeywell HEPA air filter when it first came on the market several years ago. It still works well in the living room, but it is quite noisy even on its lowest setting.

This year I purchased another Honeywell air cleaner with a HEPA filter (Model 17400) for my bedroom because I had contacted bacterial pneumonia last year and wanted to make sure I did not get it again. Next, I purchased this Honeywell 17000 Air Cleaner (with HEPA filter) for use in a smaller bedroom which has been turned into a home office and library.

These air cleaners really work! This winter I have not had a cold or flu. Also, this Honeywell Air Cleaner with HEPA filter is whisper soft, and I have had no problems with sleeping, working, reading, watching tv, or listening to music when it is running on the low and medium settings. I leave it on all the time, and I've found that it cleans the air best...

2. Why do people expect silence?
If you want a silent, useless air cleaner, go buy an overpriced oreck or sharper image unit. It will reduce things like smoke and tiny, tiny particles, but forget it getting rid of dust. I know, I had one. If you want a unit that actually "Filters" the air, buy this. Sure on Medium or High this unit will add background noise, but on low, it is hardly noticable if it's not right next to you. We noticed an immediate "crisp feel" to the air and huge reduction in dust in the air. My cough of 3 weeks is gone overnight. Coincidence.. I think not.

Don't read into the reviews that bash the noise.. Noise means it's working.

Does the job, but rather noisy
The Honeywell seems quite well made. The pre-filter and filter are easy to change. The carry handle on top is useful when you want to move it from room to room. The HEPA filter seems to work fine, as any other True HEPA model will, but my real concern is the noise level.

If all HEPA purifiers were like this, I would accept it, but I recently purchased the "Kenmore 295 CADR True HEPA Air Cleaner" from Sears. It is described as "America's quietest true HEPA high-efficiency air cleaner technology". The Kenmore is _quieter_ on its _highest_ setting, than the honeywell is on its _lowest_ setting, and if you put the Kenmore on its lowest setting, you can barely hear it. You'll have no problem sleeping or watching TV with it running. Note that even though the Kenmore is much quieter, it has a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) twice that of the Honeywell, and it handles a room twice the size. I paid $199 for the Kenmore, so yes, a little more expensive than the honeywell, but...

1. What a Relief..Updated April 9, 2010
Did a lot of research looking at larger air purifiers. Winix is getting some good reviews at the allergy specialist / clean air sites.
I picked up one from Amazon to place in our living area around 20x15 foot area.
The unit surprised me very quiet, auto speed fan and odor detection which modulates the speed of the fan along with the plasma cleaning option (off or on).
The unit will take the Winix 9000 series filter which is five stages also a big plus.
The unit is super quiet on low to medium speeds and moves a lot of air. Turbo mode moves a ton of air and naturally is more noticeable noise wise.
Great unit quality built a true winner in my book. I liked this unit so much after the first week I purchased another for the formal living area.
Very satisfied with the product.

Just a quick Update...
Going on five months now both of the 5300's are performing perfectly with no problems at all. I decided to add a Rabbit Air 421A to the living area...

2. Lots of power!!!! WOW!!!
i bought this air purifier after i was genuinely disappointed by another one - the Surround Air Xj3000 C (check my review on that one if you wish ) and honestly i didn't expect a lot. but was i wrong...:)))) this unit is absolutely amazing - lots and lots of power, strong but yet quiet fan (you barely notice it on the first 2 settings) very nice design and as i was able to understand first hand- excellent customer service on the part of the Winix people - i had a few questions and they were all answered very promptly .

When i said - "lots and lots of power " just consider this - my living room is about 400 sq.feet. there were three smokers in it puffing for a few hours. the air purifier is either on turbo mode or the third setting. all the windows and doors are closed. two friends of mine came in and they COULD NOT tell that anybody did smoke in the room!!! no smell, NADA !!!and that is about cigarette smoke - the one that stays for days and really really stinks...

Goodbye Dust! Hello FRESH air!!!
I've been researching air purifiers for awhile and finally decided to try this one out. I had been waiting on Amazon's price to become a little more competitive, but they haven't budged in months so I finally gave up and unfortunately had to buy elsewhere; I prefer to buy from Amazon Prime though because quick, safe, and easy :). This little beauty is well worth the asking price though and had I known how much I would love it I probably would hit the "add to cart" button long ago.
The Winix 5300 on its lowest setting seems to be moving just as much air as my old air purifier (Bionaire) did on it's highest setting and the Winix does it whisper quiet (to be fair the Bionaire does have a lower CADR rating).
The Winix is quite loud on it's highest TURBO setting, however this is unavoidable as it is moving MASSIVE amounts of air (a VERY ADMIRABLE QUALITY in an air purifier). The Turbo setting is really only intended to be used when you are not in the room anyway, or if you are...

1. Why are they shrinking?
First, the good - pricing was best after searching the internet. Now, the bad - Blueair seems to be cutting every corner it can think of. The surface area of the filter has been reduced so they colored the outside of the box black (previously it was white) so you don't notice that it no longer fills the entire screen of your Blueair unit. You can see that now 10% of the edges are cardboard and not filter. Secondly, at night I can now see light shining from inside the Blueair unit, meaning the filters are now thin enough to let light through where the old one were not. Sad that Blueair felt they had to go this route. I would rather they raise prices and keep a producing a quality product.

2. Out of date picture
I ordered the Blueair filters from the Recording Store, and they were not shipped until 5 days after the order was placed which resulted in longer shipping time than from other retailers. They were genuine Blueair filters and arrived in good shape.

With regard to others complaints about not having the charcoal filter, that's true, but after visiting the Blueair web site, it looks like Blueair has changed their manufacturing process and now include active carbon in the polypropylene portion of the filter.

I just purchased these filters are they do not match the picture. I have owned my purifier for a couple years now and have bought several sets of replacements. This is the first time that I received filters without the additional black carbon filter. The most recent set are just the white particle filter.

Yes, I know they sell several kinds of different filters, but I pulled up one of my old orders and clicked through to the product so I would expect to receive the exact same item. And not matter what, the picture shows the filter with carbon, which is definitely not what they shipped.

Hopefully this is just an Amazon glitch and they will sort it out quickly because the Blueair is a great air purifier. I've never had a problem with mine and it does a great job of cleaning the air.
